Coal Mine Soap

£4.50

Scented with a blend of basil, sage and mint, this soap has plenty of activated charcoal which is said to unclog pores and purify the skin.  This coal black soap with a stunning gold cut section is a best seller and makes a great gift. Made in County Durham in the north east of England. Small batches are made using the age-old cold process soap making method.   No plastic packaging and only sustainable ingredients and methods of production are used.

To get the best out of your soap, we recommend keeping it dry between uses – a free-draining soap dish is ideal.

Description

In a time when coal was king and everything needed it to function, coal was the main economic motivator behind the Stockton & Darlington Railway. The south west of Durham had plenty of coal, but too few roads to export it out to a wider domestic market or by sea from Stockton to the fastest growing city in the world – London. So a railway was designed that would carry anything in return for a fee, but it was the coal that was the main product to be carried and the source of most of the railway company’s income.

Our soap is made by the Durham Colliery Soap Studio. In fact  just like the Stockton & Darlington Railway, this soap is handmade and designed by an engineer – Rachael Smith. Rachael juggles engineering, soap making and motherhood. Move over George Stephenson!

The soap is free from palm oil.
