Cradle of the Railways CD

£5.00

A CD of songs especially written to celebrate the first 5 miles of the Stockton & Darlington Railway and Shildon in particular (except ‘Lean on Me’ by Bill Withers). These songs were written and performed by Citizen Songwriters (local people from Shildon under the professional guidance of Sam Slatcher) and first performed in Shildon’s Railway Institute. This may be the product of non-professionals, but these tunes are curiously catchy and you’ll be singing along in no time.

The CD features an extract from a painting called ‘A New Era Dawns’ by John Wigston. This was commissioned by The Railway Station Shop and is also available as a print, greetings cards and on the box of our S&DR biscuits.

The money from the sale of this CD goes directly to the Friends of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.

Description

John Wigston is best known for his watercolours of steam locomotives and he is one of a very few railway artists in the Guild of Railway Artists to specialise in early locomotives. He was born at Redhill, Surrey in 1939, but spent most of his early life in Chingford, Essex. His work for ICI on Teesside brought him to Hartlepool (his wife Vilma was from the North East) and he now resides in Weardale where he continues to paint. Whenever we visit, he is surrounded by paints, pencils, and various commissions all in different states of readiness. Classical music blasts out from his radio, but soon this is switched off so we can talk railways, engines, art, politics and religion over a cup of tea.

You can find out more about Citizen Songwriters here.
